Virak Orthopedics LLC is an innovative orthopedic company based in New Jersey. The company was founded by Dr. Virak Tan with the mission of identifying and developing clinically driven products that enhance the treatment of orthopedic cases. The company seeks to work with orthopedic and hand surgeons in the development of unique orthopedic devices that will result in improved patient care.
The company initially launched the DigiFix External Fixator system in 2004. The DigiFix Tray contains the necessary implants and instruments, but hospitals and surgery centers are required to replace the implants and sterilize the tray between cases. In September 2019, the company introduced a sterile kit, making the DigiFix more readily available for use. All design and manufacturing for Virak Orthopedics are performed in the United States.
Dr. Tan is a fellow of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has Subspecialty Certificate in Surgery of the Hand. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery and obtained additional microvascular surgery training in the Plastic Surgery Department at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. Dr. Tan is Clinical Professor in Orthopaedics and was the Founding Director of the Hand, Upper Extremity & Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School. He has authored over 70 scientific articles and 20 book chapters. Dr. Tan has lectured extensively, both at the national and international level. He has been practicing hand surgery since 2001.
